Dirt buildup can cause your jewelry to wear more quickly. Take it to your jeweler to be professionally cleaned to keep your jewelry looking its best and to be checked for wear or damage. Between professional cleanings, you can use a soft toothbrush and jewelry cleaner at home. Polishing cloths also work well to remove tarnish and bring back the shine in your jewelry.
Have prongs checked every 6 months on jewelry that you wear often.
Jewelry should not be worn in hot tubs or pools. The chlorine eats away gold and silver and may discolor some gemstones. It also has an oxidizing effect on silver, causing it to turn black.
Remove jewelry when doing housework and manual labor that could cause you to lose or damage your jewelry.
Put jewelry on after applying makeup, perfume or hairspray to keep it clean. Wipe jewelry off with a soft cloth after removing it.
Have your jewelry appraised and insured against loss, theft and damage.
Jewelry should be kept in a clean and secure place.
Handle gems and pearls as little as possible. Oils in your skin can build up over time and dull their appearance.
When making jewelry purchases make sure to find out about the gemstones properties so that you can handle and clean it properly. Some stones, such as pearls, opals, turquoise, and amber, require special care.
